Undergraduate Research

At UNC Asheville, students have opportunities to engage in hands-on research through close mentorship with faculty. Students can showcase their work at the university’s research symposium, organized by the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Activity Program (URCAP), and regional conferences. In addition to on-campus opportunities, we support students in applying for competitive summer research programs at other institutions, including the Cross-Institutional Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) and National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REUs).

Explore the Analytical and the Creative:

Success in mathematics begins with curiosity, sharp reasoning, and the drive to solve complex problems that shape our world.

I enjoy working with numbers and problem-solving. I’d like to use my math degree to possibly work in the government or as an analyst.

DataFest

UNC Asheville students recently earned top honors at DataFest, a prestigious data analysis competition held April 4–6 at Furman University. Led by Dr. Kedai Cheng, Assistant Professor of Statistics, the team—Amity Martino, Meghan Sedberry, Emily Bigelow, and Amina Hajdarevic—spent the weekend tackling a large, complex dataset, working under tight deadlines to analyze, visualize, and craft a compelling story from the data. Their efforts paid off: the team earned Best in Show and placed second in Visualization, standing out among a competitive field judged by industry professionals.
